THE ROLE
The Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer is responsible
for coordinating executive efforts to promote culturally competent
patient centered care as well as diversity and inclusion as it
concerns the Providence Shared Services work force and ensuring
alignment with core values throughout all aspects of the business.
This person will ideally live in Seattle, Portland or Irvine, but
remote work is a potential option depending on location.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion, grounded in justice and
integrated into all aspects of health care, are vital for improving
patient care, health outcomes, and quality of life. Providence
intends to differentiate itself as the health system that provides
a connected experience of care based on a foundation of clinical
excellence. To achieve this vision, Providence will be undertaking
work to deliver a new customer experience across all entities.
Providence is an integrated health system including hospitals,
ambulatory care clinics, home and community health services and
long-term care programs. Fundamental to its mission and core
values, Providence has a special concern for serving the poor and
vulnerable.
The DEI leader also coordinates diversity, equity and
inclusion-oriented programs and initiatives, including the
development and implementation of strategic plans for DEI aligned
with the Providence Integrated Strategic and Financial Plan. As a
health care leader, the DEI leader maintains strong collaborative
working relationships among senior executives, all clinical and
non-clinical caregivers, consumers, community advocates and various
external constituents, and ultimately serves as a team builder.
The DEI leader serves as a cultural guide or broker who provides
insight into the characteristic of differences - whether religious,
ethnic, gender, or otherwise - and their effects on health
awareness, access, and status.
The DEI leader will develop relationships and implement the
Providence outreach vision with regional leaders, caregivers,
physicians, and other external constituents. The position will be
responsible for partnering with Providence clinical program leaders
and other executives to ensure a high level of collaboration and
coordination of the outreach vision and strategy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide vision, leadership, coordination, and strategic planning
for the design and implementation of an institutional-wide platform
to ensure diversity, equity and respect for all staff, patients and
their families, and other stakeholders throughout Providence Shared
Services; including, responsibility for coordinating implementation
of the strategic plan for culturally competent patient centered
care (CCPCC) and workforce diversity and inclusion. This is done in
partnership with other administrative/divisional units to ensure
that all diversity initiatives are aligned with the overall
strategic plan. Provide leadership and coordination for diversity
education and assessment initiatives that ensures support of the
mission; and related objectives and efforts that guides work toward
expected outcomes.
- Evaluate institutional-wide progress toward creating a diverse
and equitable workforce, and ensuring clinical services are
delivered equitably.
- Conduct continuous monitoring of environments, regular
assessment, and evaluation of work and clinical contexts. Identify
or develop actionable, proactive metrics that support monitoring
and measurement of progress around cultural competence and
diversity management in the workforce.
- Coordinate and provide leadership for the development,
implementation and operation of the Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion Integration Council.
- Coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of
Diversity/Inclusion Working Groups, committees and councils that
enhance the understanding and bridge differences up, down, and
across the Shared Services region.
- Advise the CEO, leaders, managers, and supervisors on issues
relating to culturally competent care and workforce diversity and
inclusion. Develop and present an array of innovative ideas and
program concepts for consideration, selection, and implementation
by Shared Services within Providence.
- Identify, develop, foster and maintain strong internal and
external relationships for the purpose of integrating
diversity/inclusion as well as population and community health
initiatives which advance health status, access, and awareness in
the community.
- Formulate and implement a culture of diversity and inclusion,
engagement of diverse communities, clients, and staff, and ensuring
that policies, procedures, programs, and initiatives and are
reflective of 21st century demographics and realities. Define and
communicate internal quality standards for inclusive culture and
engagement programs, and ensure that all aspects of the programs
are executed against those standards. Ensure successful delivery of
programs/services and monitor effectiveness of inclusive culture,
diversity, and engagement programs.
- Promote an inclusive work environment by supporting training
and development activities, and provide advocacy for all
individuals and groups that support initiatives promoting campus
learning that is diverse and inclusive.
- Promote a positive image and positive external relations for
Providence Shared Services by communicating and interacting with
city, state, and other officials in matters related to health care
and related diversity efforts. Represent the CEO and the ministry
in various community, state and regional activities designed to
promote diversity at Providence and Catholic health care in
general.
- Create and implement communication strategies and content
management for training, web resources (internal and external
audiences), and print materials to support diversity and related
initiatives.
- Collaborate with senior leaders to integrate diversity and
equity practices into institutional employment and workplace
practices including business practices and programming.
- In partnership with other stakeholder groups, ensure Providence
Shared Services' compliance with applicable federal/state laws,
policies, and procedures. Promote diverse talent identification and
retention strategies for clinical and related staff members. Assist
with preparing a variety of reports and correspondence, including
but not limited to employment, equity and diversity/inclusion
activities required by state and federal agencies.
- Advocate for infusion of diversity concepts in the general
training and development curriculum including multiple
perspectives, and teaching strategies that prepare leaders and
staff for success in a diverse and global workplace.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
Required experience/education for this position include:
- Bachelor's Degree in Business (including human resources),
Health (all professions within healthcare and public health),
Healthcare Administration, Sociology, Education, Political Science,
or related field; or equivalent educ/experience
- Upon request: Driving may be necessary as part of this role.
Caregivers are required to comply with all state laws and
requirements for driving. Caregivers will be expected to provide
proof of driver license and auto insurance upon request. See policy

- 3 years of work experience developing and implementing
diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; including experience
working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations
- 10 or more years of experience in leading and managing large,
complex strategies to successful completion
- Must have an in depth knowledge of healthcare business
operations
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain relationships
with a variety of business, physicians, and healthcare
executives
- Must have a broad knowledge and understanding of the trends and
changes taking place in health care and their implications
- Must demonstrate strong, entrepreneurial skills and is a
self-starter
- Demonstrated a strong ability to lead teams and maintain
positive professional relationships with leaders, team members and
physicians
- Demonstrated effectiveness in engaging, coordination,
collaborating with and otherwise leading diverse work groups and
teams
- Exceptional oral (public speaking) and written communication
skills. Must be able to communicate to a wide variety of
audiences
- Exceptional negotiation skills and keen political savvy. Able
to deal with high levels of ambiguity and complexity
- Must have the ability to gain the respect and trust of senior
leadership and physician partners
- Must possess the ability to collect, analyze and present data
and research with credibility to both inform decisions and help
build the case for change to support the execution of the
decision
- Outstanding interpersonal skills
- Must work independently with minimum supervision. Ability to
plan, organize and prioritize projects, time and resources to
accomplish objectives
- Ability to accurately prioritize and organize short-term and
long-term responsibilities in response to changing demands
- Makes good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom,
experience and judgment
- Must meet tight deadlines and meeting schedules. Respond
appropriately to requests from leaders and other departments
- Ability to consistently lead groups through planning sessions
and assessments of key strategic issues
- Ability to communicate and work with all levels of management.
Understanding of basic change management principles and tools.
Proven ability to effectively facilitate groups of leaders
- Understanding of how to develop a strategic and/or business
plan working with a team, document that plan and translate it into
actionable objectives
- Able to understand how to develop a market and environmental
assessment to support strategic and business planning; assess which
information is critical to the question
- Business development skills; proven ability to identify and
assess new opportunities in a variety of service lines and develop
consistent, focused opportunity assessments.
- Excellent analytic skills. Proven ability to translate data
into usable information
- Ability to identify an approach to a given challenge or problem
and to generate confidence in the approach chosen and engage
leaders & physicians to secure their participation, concepts, and
ideas
- Is skilled at anticipating future consequences and trends
accurately while creating competitive and breakthrough strategy
plans
- Thorough knowledge of the health care environment, including
trends concerning health insurance, health care delivery, provider
relationships and regulatory issues
- Understanding and be able to maximize use of Internet and
Intranet
- Working knowledge of various software, Excel, Word, PowerPoint,
is necessary
- Reliable vehicle to travel throughout the region.
Preferred experience/education for this position include:
- Master's Degree
- Ph.D.
- Experience in business development, strategic implementation,
developing and implementing contractual relationships, new business
ventures and creative partnerships
Work experience in health care, preferably in an integrated health
system, health plan, hospital, or physician group. About
